School holiday fun for teenagers on the Northern Beaches

It’s no secret that Mona Vale offers plenty of activities for teenagers looking for fun and adventure - particularly for the more active teens. Here are some great options nearby.

Hit the beach

Mona Vale Beach is a popular spot for swimming, surfing, and relaxing under a beach umbrella or cool cabana. The surf is perfect for beginners, and you can take lessons at Chix Surf School, which run daily until the end of February (contact them to find out where they are teaching, as locations will change depending on the surf conditions.)

Pittwater Park

Colloquially known as Rat Park after the local rugby team, this is another default teen meeting point where you’ll find basketball courts, a skate park, and open spaces perfect for sports and hanging out with friends. There’s also a great walking track and picnic area - come on Fridays for the Beaches Farmers Market from 8am to 1pm with a picnic blanket before school goes back!

Narrabeen Lagoon

Hire a kayak or paddleboard and enjoy the calm waters of Narrabeen Lagoon. It’s a peaceful and shady spot, perfect for water sports, and the Narrabeen Lagoon trail is an easy 8.4km loop on a shared track for walkers and cyclists that will take you through beautiful landscapes.

Hungry after all that exertion? Head to the Tramshed for teen-friendly burgers, tacos and hot chips.

Local skate parks and sports centres

Pittwater Skate Park is a well-equipped skate park with bowls and ramps for skateboarding, scootering, or rollerblading, while Narrabeen Skate Park offers a larger variety of ramps for both skaters and BMX riders.

For climbers, the Northern Beaches Rock House offers a Youth Group program for teens to train, get fit and just socialise while improving their climbing skills with like minded kids. Teens can check out their excellent climbing facilities on a day pass and then decide if they want to join up for regular sessions.

Catch a movie

If a quieter activity is called for, there’s always United Cinema at Warriewood and Hoyts Cinema at Warringah Mall for the latest blockbuster release in air-conditioned comfort.

And Sydney also offers some wonderful outdoor cinemas in summer - Manly Open Air Cinema is now up and running with a mix of classics and new releases, with food trucks and ice cream available. Bring a blanket, warm clothes and enjoy!

On January 25 there will also be a free screening of the Australian movie Go Karts!
Tickets are free and gates open at 5.30pm for a 6.30pm movie start. Bring a picnic rug and enjoy a night under the stars for the whole family, with a variety of local food trucks serving up dinner.

Get creative

Artistic teens may like the Beaches Art School, which offers art classes run by founder Lisa Relon Williams and other artists in a beautiful light-filled studio in Mona Vale. Holiday programmes have just opened, so get in touch with the school to find out if there are places, or enrol now in a term-time regular art class. Everyone is welcome at these sessions, from absolute beginners to seasoned artists.

Whether you're into nature, sports, movies, or just hanging out with friends, Mona Vale and its surrounding areas have something to keep every teen entertained.
