When you live on the Northern Beaches, there are plenty of water-based activities you can take part in around Pittwater, Narrabeen Lake and the beach. Whatever types of water sports you enjoy, you’re sure to find a few you’ll want to try this summer.
Water activities at the beach
We have plenty of great Beaches to explore on the Northern Beaches including surf beaches such as Narrabeen Beach, Turimetta Beach, Warriewood Beach, Bongin Beach and Bungan Beach. Safer swimming beaches on the Pittwater side of the beaches include Sandy Beach, Paradise Beach and Taylors Beach.
These outstanding beaches lend themselves to plenty of swimming, surfing and fishing. If you’re looking for a delightful, more secluded beach for relaxing calm-water swimming, then check out Clareville Beach.
Fishing enthusiasts can enjoy any of four aquatic reserves on the beaches including Cabbage Tree Bay, Narrabeen Head, Barrenjoey Head and Long Reef.
If you’re taking a drive around the beaches to explore some of the many beaches, don’t forget to schedule a visit to Barrenjoey Lighthouse right at the tip. You can even take a guided tour and learn about the area’s maritime heritage.
Water activities around Pittwater
On the quieter crystal-clear waters of our beloved Pittwater, you can enjoy a range of boating activities such as sailing, paddleboarding, windsurfing, and kayaking. Kite surfing is also gaining popularity, especially in Palm Beach.
If you don’t have your own yacht and would like to try your hand at sailing around the serene waters of Pittwater and the Hawkesbury, you can charter a yacht from Sailing Pittwater, Allsail Pittwater Yacht Charter or Taylor Made Escapes. If you’re a complete novice, take some sailing lessons.
For a relaxing kayaking adventure, take a guided tour on the water exploring hidden beaches and secluded bays. Both Pittwater Kayaking and Pittwater Eco Adventures have guided tours you can enjoy.
If you’re into more leisurely activities, you can do some relaxing sightseeing around Pittwater on one of the many ferries operating on the Pittwater. Church Point Ferry Service runs various guided tours you can enjoy during the week or you could go one further ‒ charter a ferry and spend as much time as you want on the water.
Palm Beach Ferries also offers some short cruises around the waterways. From Palm Beach, don’t forget to look for the whales that might be cruising past during the whale migration between May and November. (Whale-watching tours run from the Palm Beach Wharf.)
When you really want to get away from it all, why not hire a houseboat with a group of friends? We can assure you of a fab weekend or weekday adventure as you cruise Pittwater and the Hawkesbury River bays.
For the more adventurous, you have to check out fliteboarding at Church Point. This relatively new experience has you gliding above the water on a surfboard that’s propelled by an electric motor under the water. A fliteboard is actually an electric hydrofoil surfboard and you can take some lessons with Fliteschool Manly who operate 1.5-hour tours around Church Point.
Water activities on Narrabeen Lagoon
Narrabeen Lagoon or Narrabeen Lake, as it’s also called, is where you can spend many enjoyable summer days playing on the water or bushwalking through Narrabeen Lagoon State Park. Popular water activities include fishing, sailing, windsurfing, and inflatable kite surfing.
You can also hire paddle boards and paddle boats from the banks of the lake, especially at Middle Creek Reserve where it’s possible to do a guided stand-up paddle board tour of Narrabeen Lagoon with Sunlark Watersports.
For something a little different, why not head to the Narrabeen Lakers Dragon Boat Club near Jamison Park? Be prepared for a good workout, though, if you take advantage of one of their free sessions.
