Create your own home theatre – here’s how

Love a night at the movies?

We can’t post this article without mentioning our local institution: Warriewood Cinemas. Families have been visiting this landmark for years to enjoy the latest blockbusters and there’s nothing like enjoying a dress circle seat in the main theatre, taking in a new movie after being serenaded by the owner himself. Roy Mustaca is a well-known local character and the owner of this family-run cinema… if you’re lucky, he will deliver a performance to make your night.

Warriewood Cinemas has a bar and restaurant as well as offering classic popcorn and choc tops. Well-behaved children may even be offered a lollipop after their movie.

While we love to support local businesses, it’s also nice to have a night in to enjoy a movie. If you like the sound of that, read on to find out how to set up a dedicated home theatre in your home.

Choose the right space

The first step in creating a home theatre is selecting the appropriate room. Ideally, this space should be isolated from the rest of the house to minimise noise interference. A basement, lower floor or spare room without a lot of windows will work well because it will give you better control over lighting and acoustics.

Soundproofing and acoustics

Soundproofing your home theatre ensures that sound doesn’t leak out and external noises don’t intrude. Adding insulation to the walls, using heavy curtains and installing acoustic panels can all help manage noise interference. Carpeting the floor and adding soft furnishings can also enhance acoustics by reducing sound reflection and creating that soft, cosy theatre feeling at home.

Choose your screen and projector

The centrepiece of any home theatre is the screen. Options include large LED or OLED TVs, but for a true cinematic experience, consider a projector and screen setup. Projectors offer a larger display and can provide a more authentic feel. When selecting a projector, look for one with high resolution (at least 1080p, though 4K is preferable) and high brightness to ensure clear images.

Get the sound right

For immersive sound, invest in a good audio system. A surround sound system with multiple speakers positioned around the room can create a three-dimensional audio experience. Ensure that your audio receiver supports the number of channels your system requires.

Think about seating and layout

Comfortable seating is crucial for a home theatre. Recliners or dedicated theatre seats with cup holders and armrests will enhance your experience. Arrange your lounges to face the screen directly, ensuring everyone has an unobstructed view. If you have the space, consider elevating the back row of seats to mimic a real theatre setup. Alternatively, a big, cosy sofa will also fit the bill.

Lighting is everything

Controlling lighting is essential for a home theatre. Install dimmable lights that you can control remotely to set the perfect ambiance. Blackout curtains or shades will help to block out external light and reduce glare on the screen.

ShadeCo in Mona Vale can make curtains and blockout screens to order.

Control systems

Integrate a universal remote or a home automation system to manage all your devices from a single interface. This includes your projector, audio system, lighting and any streaming devices.

Smart home systems can now allow you to control your theatre environment with your voice, so have a look at what’s available.

Add some aesthetic touches

Finally, add personal touches to make the space uniquely yours. Decorate with movie posters, LED strip lighting, and themed decor to enhance the ambiance. Storage for gaming consoles can also be incorporated for convenience. There are some fun game controller stands for sale at EB Games in Warriewood that will give your room some personality.

Don’t forget about cables; if you use cable ducting and cord hiders, your home theatre will look much more presentable.

Enjoy your night at the movies!

Having a home cinema is a great way to spend time as a family. As your kids grow you can enjoy Disney films, the Marvel series and Star Wars together. When they are teenagers, a home cinema also gives them an option to entertain their friends.
